Adjunct Instructor Program
The District Fire Training Councils are soliciting Fire Instructors that would be
willing to be Adjunct Instructors for thier District. If you are an Indiana
certified fire instructor and are willing to serve your district then
please fill out the application form and instructor agreement. The objective
of this request is to establish a list of willing certified instructors
in each District. This does not necessary mean that because you have returned
all the information that you will automatically become a District
adjunct instructor.

Purpose
The purpose of the Adjunct Instructor Program is to
provide safe, quality fire training to firefighters or candidates
within all counties of each district. This program will provide the opportunity
for quality training to be provided at the local level without excessive
travel or a financial burden to the individual.
Mission
Our primary efforts will be focused on training individuals to
work competently and safely as Firefighters in Indiana. As a district
we will devote considerable effort and resources to this strategy
because we believe it is the most effective and efficient way to
improve fire protection for Indiana’s citizens and ensure the safety
of firefighters, so EVERYONE GOES HOME!
Role Of Adjunct Instructor
The role of an adjunct instructor is to deliver firefighter training
at the local level and at fixed training facilities.
- Must be 21 years old
- Must be a fire service member for at least 5 years
- Must be certified as a Firefighter I/II or First Class Firefighter,
and in good standing with the Indiana Department of Homeland
Security Division of Training
- Must be certified as an Instructor I but preferably an Instructor
II/III, and in good standing with the Indiana Department of
Homeland Security Division of Training
- Must posses a valid Indiana Drivers license
Duties Of An Adjunct Instructor
- They are able to oversee the administration of classes
- Observe and evaluate students as they learn
- They are able to teach from a prepared lesson plan or teach
from their own lesson plans as long as they are an Instructor
II/III and the District Council approves of the content
- They are able to teach solo
- They are able to proctor tests as long as they are an Instructor
II/III
- Be able to teach and oversee a practical session
- They are able to ensure that all practical skills are being
preformed correctly by students
Process for Becoming an Adjunct Instructor
The candidate must fill out an appropriate application and send
it to the District Council for review. The candidate may be requested
to appear before the District Council or their appointee for an
interview.
Training Safety
- Safety is of the utmost importance and must always be the
first consideration.
- Instructors must set a good example by using proper safety
equipment and procedures and must remember that they are responsible
for the safety of every student.
- Instructors will follow all applicable regulations and/or
standards related to training safety including NFPA 1403 for
live burn training.
- All instructors are authorized to take the necessary action
to correct unsafe conditions.
Instructor Code Of Conduct
The Adjunct Instructor Shall:
- Do everything possible to achieve excellence in professional
conduct and deliver the highest quality instruction in every
class taught
- Show respect for students in language and actions
- Treat all people fairly, without regard to race, sex, religion,
age, disability, national origin or persons department
- Set aside conflicts between myself, the students and others,
within the context of carrying out my professional responsibilities
- Provide a safe and professional learning environment for
all students
- Strive to maintain continuous and positive communications
between students, instructors, and other fire department staff
- Present themselves in a professional manner, through attitude,
dress, and presentation
Instructor Appearance Standards
- For working outdoors, coveralls, designated protective clothing
required by curriculum, shirts and trousers, or other proper
clothing to meet inclement weather (rain coats, etc) may be
permitted
- Classroom Appearance: It is each instructor’s responsibility
to use good judgment in selecting attire that projects a professional
image and that is appropriate for both climate differences and
classroom activities. The District Council has the authority to
make a determination that an instructor’s attire may be inappropriate
- NO-Beard Policy: All Instructors will be clean-shaven. To
promote understanding of this policy, the following information
is provided
- 29 CFR 1910.134 (q) (1) Facepiece seal protection. (i) The
employer shall not permit respirators with tight-fitting facepieces
to be worn by employees who have: (A) Facial hair that comes
between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or
that interferes with valve function
- NFPA 1500 5-3.9 A growth of beard or facial hair at any
point where the SCBA facepiece is designed to seal with the
face, regardless of the specific fit test measurement that can
be obtained, or hair that could interfere with the facepiece
valve function shall be prohibited for members required to use
SCBA
Recordkeeping for Adjunct Instructors
The Adjunct Instructor shall have all students fill out an Instructor
Evaluation form to be turned into the District Council for review
for any training program that is paid for or is a part of the State
of Indiana Firefighter Training System Plan.
